The heritage restoration award received by Gurney Paragon marked the first FIABCI world award won by a Malaysian company in the heritage restoration category.
What This Means for Property Buyers
Award-winning developments have undergone international assessment for their design, construction quality and community planning.
Such recognition can serve as a valuable selling point when owners decide to resell or rent out their properties.
2. Industrial Hub and World-Class Infrastructure
The Silicon Valley of the East
According to data compiled by InvestPenang from the Department of Statistics Malaysia and United Nations trade statistics, Penang accounted for approximately 5% of global semiconductor exports in 2019.
Penang is home to more than 350 multinational companies and 4,000 SMEs.
Major semiconductor companies such as Intel, Broadcom and Micron, which are among the world's top ten semiconductor companies cited in the original report, have established manufacturing operations in Penang.
Penang Second Bridge (Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge)
The Penang Second Bridge stretches approximately 24 kilometres and officially opened to traffic in March 2014.
It connects Batu Maung on Penang Island to Batu Kawan on the mainland.
In 2015, the bridge received the prestigious Brunel Medal from the United Kingdom's Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
The bridge incorporates high-damping natural rubber bearings designed for earthquake resistance and is engineered to withstand distant earthquakes measuring up to 7.5 on the Richter scale.
Silicon Island
Silicon Island is a 2,300-acre land reclamation project located off the southern coast of Penang Island.
Land reclamation works are expected to be completed by 2032.
The development is planned to include a Green Tech Park, a Global Business Services hub and residential developments.
According to state government projections, the project could generate approximately RM74.7 billion in investment and create 220,000 employment opportunities.
What This Means for Property Buyers
The presence of multinational companies creates continuing rental demand from engineers and expatriate employees, particularly around Bayan Lepas, Batu Maung and Batu Kawan.
Once Silicon Island becomes operational, residential demand in southern Penang Island is expected to increase further.
3. UNESCO Designations and International Travel Rankings
George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site (2008)
George Town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008, together with Melaka, under the designation "Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca."
The restoration of the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, also known as the Blue Mansion, received the Award of Excellence, the highest distinction in the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation, in 2000.
Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve (2021)
On 15 September 2021, the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve was officially recognised under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
It became Malaysia's third UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve.
The reserve covers a total area of 12,481 hectares, comprising 7,285 hectares of land and 5,196 hectares of marine areas.
It represents approximately 25% of Penang Island and includes Penang Hill, Penang National Park, the Botanic Gardens and six permanent forest reserves.
UNESCO Cultural Heritage Nominations in Progress
Chingay, through a joint Malaysia–Singapore nomination, and lion dance, through a joint Malaysia–China nomination, were submitted in March 2025 for consideration under UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The results are expected to be announced by the end of 2026.
International Travel Rankings
Penang was featured by CNN Travel and The New York Times among their recommended destinations to visit in 2026.
Penang was also the only Malaysian destination included in CNN's 2026 travel list.
What This Means for Property Buyers
UNESCO heritage areas and popular tourism destinations can support demand for short-term rentals and serviced apartments.
The Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve also contributes to the preservation of green spaces and the island's overall residential environment.
However, property restoration and redevelopment within the UNESCO World Heritage core zone are subject to strict regulations.
Potential buyers should understand these restrictions before purchasing properties in protected heritage areas.
